Virtually eliminate ghosting from your TV signal! Can be used in a number of different countries other than New Zealand
The Black Diamond GCR (Ghost Cancel Reduction) Decoder has been developed to greatly reduce the effects of picture ghosting. The GCR decoder will not eliminate ghosting but can greatly reduce ghosting to an acceptable level.

The GCR decoder is based on a international ghost cancel standard which requires the television broadcaster to transmit a special reference signal. The GCR decoder can not function as a ghost cancellation decoder without the reference signal. The reference signal is placed on line 318 of a PAL broadcast signal and enables the GCR decoder to check for distortions such as ghosting, video levels/ video frequency response, and colour phasing errors detected by the television receiver.

Because of the colour phase and video level correction the GCR decoder can even enhance good "ghost free" television reception. The GCR decoder however does not incorporate a picture noise reduction system or time base corrector and will not operate effectively on a VHS video recorded tapes.

Pictures without grain and noise will give the best ghosting results. This is because often ghosts actually cancel out some video frequencies. This effect usually only occurs either on weak signals or near ghosts caused by poor quality aerial splitters, corroded aerial terminals and non terminated aerial extensions.

The GCR decoder will amplify missing video frequencies which if the cancellations are greater than 6 db will amplify the picture noise. The GCR decoder will automatically decide if this is the case and not de-ghost the signal. This feature can be overridden with the "Near ghost bypass option".

The GCR decoder has base band video in and video out which can be plugged directly into some selected products. Otherwise it must be connected using the A/V leads between a VCR and a Colour television using the AV (Audio Visual) connectors.

The GCR decoder greatly improves Teletext reception in most cases providing error free Teletext.

What happens to the video signal inside the GCR Decoder
The video signal is first filtered then converted from an analogue video signal to a digital video signal.

The digital video is then feed into a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) which studies the reference signal on Line 318. The DSP then corrects the video levels and phasing. Then the DSP calculates what level anti ghost signal is required per video line to electrically cancel the ghosting effect. The DSP can place up to 576 anti ghost signal per video line. The DSP makes 20 billion mathematical calculations per second making up to nine million individual picture adjustments per second.

The corrected digital video signal is then converted to an analog video signal.
